Introduction

While looking at Lincoln County for the last 25 years or so, I have often been struck by the effect of men who served at Ft. Stanton and then stayed on, during the early years of the County. Not only as military protectors but more so as graduates of the military system and contributors to the fabric of the surrounding community.

As I was preparing my book "Historic Lincoln, the Buildings and People" I became acquainted with Gary L. Jones, a descendant of the Fritz family of Lincoln. It turns out that he has written an excellent piece about Emil Fritz and his exploits in the West.

That got me thinking, most of us don't really understand what it meant to be a soldier in the mid 1800s as well as what brought Soldiers to Ft. Stanton. Using Gary's wonderful story as a springboard, it seemed that if there were other men, there would be other stories; to that end, I thought it would be good to profile various individuals that came with the military and then stayed and contributed their part, as well as the outfits that brought them.

Therefore, that's what this section of the project is all about: Showcasing the individuals that came to Lincoln County with the military and stayed, as well as some of the units which brought them.

Footnote: Since Lincoln County really got going in the years after the Civil War, perhaps a survey of the other 'County's Veterans' and their contributions and service would be in order... someday. The beginnings of that are in my folder 01f- Volunteers and Regulars II.
